Mileage-based Toll Collection
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications is to implement the mileage-based toll collection for national highways starting from the end of 2012.
While the plan is yet to be finalized, the ministry has already started to conduct a poll, to survey the public's opinion on the various rates proposed.
Drivers who use the Hsichi toll station frequently would notice a recently installed sensor, which is a new device to replace manual toll collection in the future.
Ministry of Transportation and Communications plans to adopt the mileage-based charging system for toll collection starting at the end of 2012.
In an effort to make a fair pricing for the mileage unit, the Ministry has conducted a tracking poll, which is hoped to minimize the disputes over the fare changes.
National Freeway Bureau declines to reveal the proposed fare plans so far, only emphasizing the pay-as-you-go concept that it adopts.
Currently, it is estimated that 68.1% of highway road users travel for a short distance without having to pay a toll.
When the new system is implemented, the toll for a long distance trip will be cheaper.
But the toll for a short-distance-travel is increasing.
However, the biggest problem now is that the payment is made through an on-board unit.
Since the installation unit of the ETC hasn't exceeded 50%, the National Freeway Bureau says it will urge the contractor Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection to lower the prices for such unit to encourage more people to install it.
