Curtains Down
The once famous cinema, "First Theater" in Taichung City, which shows second-run films, is facing the fate of shutting down at the end of this year. With only 3 of its kind
This old projector makes a distinctive popping sound when the film's credits roll, and this old projectionist has grey hair as he has been doing this work for a decade in this old cinema in Taichung.
It is a pity that it is closing at the end of the month for many fans of the cinema. Each ticket costs just 120 NTD, and you can watch a whole day worth of movies as there are just two films.
It has become a favorite for the elderly and the young students.
Ten years ago, it was the peak period as it declined along with the central business district with the crowd thinning compared to previous years.
There are no longer young people outside and more foreign laborers congregating have affected business.
Also, many people now use the internet to download movies and DVD rentals at home have also cut into business.
This along with the environment and new hardware upgrades have squeezed the theater.
Ten years ago, this theater said that Taichung had 10 second-run theaters, and now there are only 3.
This means that film fans are worried as this difficult business environment has led the theater to put up a sign for renovations, as this theater is a witness to the changing times and the rise and fall of the city.
