Mango for All Seasons
Mango is typically harvested in the summer, but now, developments in South East Asia are making mangoes available throughout the year, with an lengthened production season. In Taiwan, our winter season is actually perfect for the growing of these fruits, though the farmers who plant this crop are relatively low.
Wave after wave of cold weather in the winter makes few people believe that Taiwan can harvest tropical mangoes during this season.
A custard apple farmer in Taitung, 4 years ago began planting a Southeast Asian variety of mango that has a longer harvest period, meaning the whole year can be mango season.
The southeastern part of Taiwan has a warmer winter than the west and is more suitable for mango growth, with Taitung being an especially good place for harvest.
Farmers said that these year round mangoes suffer from fewer pests and diseases and with good management, yield more fruit.
The have a very special appearance with a golden yellow color and cutting it open reveals fruit that is also golden yellow.
It really looks like gold with a good taste and is not sour with a sweeter and more fragrant and juicy taste.
If you want to eat mangoes, you no longer have to wait until the summer, as now it can be mango season even in the winter.
However, there are currently very few farmers planting this crop as this is a new type of crop worthy of promotion.
