Cyclist’s Safety
With more cyclists on the road to promote a green environment, there has been a twenty percent increase on cyclist accidents compared to two years ago.
According to the Ministry of Transportations and Communications, most accidents occur during rush hour, and at busier intersections.
Trucks, cars, scooters and bikes are all crammed in the slow lane, making way on the road.
Some cyclists also cross over to the pedestrian lane to save some time and trouble, but actually,
there has been an increase in the numbers of people injured on bikes this year comparing to the past according to the Ministry of Transportations and Communications.
Just last year alone, there were more than 10,000 people injured, which is 20% more than 2007.
And the time that has the highest rate of accidents would be during rush hour, and the place would be at big intersections.
The Department of Transportations in Taipei says that the biggest cause for accidents is because the cyclists would go on the pedestrian sidewalk but not slowing down.
Others like running red lights, going opposite directions on the road, or going through fast lanes are all causes of accidents for cyclists.
The department also warn that other than spreading messages about being cautious, cyclists will soon be fined or penalized for all the illegal acts.
