Taiwan plans to hold a military drill later this month, assuming a battle scenario where China launches a missile attack on the island. President Ma will also participate in the exercise. However, as cross-strait relations just reached a new high following the recent signing of ECFA, some question the wisdom of holding such a drill at this time.

Although the cross-strait relations have warmed up after the signing of the ECFA, President Ma was quite reserved at a press conference days ago when asked when China would remove the missiles against Taiwan.

The military confrontation between China and Taiwan is not ended yet.

In the Han Guang military drills, that take place on July 19th, President Ma would personally attend the simulation of a sudden attack from Mainland

China, instructing the army's handling when the war breaks out.

The drills simulate over 1,000 missiles targeted at Taiwan and how the army would respond to the attacks while preserving combat power.

Still, having such drills around the time when the ECFA was signed has drawn different views from the ruling and the opposition parties.

Although the Ministry of National Defense says the simulation is pretty much the same like previous years, the Ma administration also wishes to pledge that Taiwan's self-defense capability is equally important since China hasn't removed the missiles against Taiwan.
