Civil groups and journalism scholars have established an anti-advertorial league yesterday, in the hope to further monitor the progress in banning the government from buying news coverage for political purposes. The league said that regulating the ads is just the beginning; they will continue to protest until commercial product placements in news media disappear for good.

The Bureau of Health Promotion took a full-page ad warning about the dangers of chewing beetle nut.

The Council of Agriculture reported on small tenant farmers in this series which was reported every day, as it is difficult to find out which articles are government ads.

The front page was bought with government tax money. Senior media officials have been angered by this issue. President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Wu Den-yih, have responded from both ruling and opposition parties offering amendments to the law.

The DPP version prohibits the government from being hidden and undertaking this embedded advertising.

The KMT offered to amend the law with the government and foundations not facing restrictions.

The Association of Taiwan Journalists, media reform groups, and a dozen members of the alliance have set up an anti-news buying alliance.

They said that it is just the beginning of their monitoring work, as they will closely follow the legislation to amend the law.

They hope that the government will not engage in the news business and news placement.
