WARNING SYSTEM ON THE WAY
Issues over earthquakes and tsunamis remain a hot topic among experts in Taiwan. While some believe that the island is not prone to have quakes that exceed the magnitude of 9, some are saying that tsunami is a concern in the eastern part of Taiwan.
The National Science Council is currently in the process of completing a simulation research on tsunami for the future establishment of a warning system.
Japan was devastated by the massive earthquake that took place in Miyagi. Many wonder whether a magnitude 9 earthquake would also happen to Taiwan.
Scholars analyze that Taiwan is not prone to huge earthquakes like that, given the geographical structures.
The massive earthquake in Miyagi was caused by three major ruptures and the fault is about 560 kilometers long.
But the island of Taiwan measures nearly 400 km from north to south and doesn't have an environment for such long rupture.
Still scholars remind the public that an earthquake measuring 8 could happen in Taiwan and the island has to watch out for impacts caused by tsunami.
National Science Council says it will obtain confidential geological information of Taiwan's sea zone and commissions a research team to conduct the tsunami simulation. Given the steep and deep trenches in Eastern Taiwan, which would lower the impact of tsunami, the related authority plans to build a detection and warning system in the next three to six months to minimize damages before the disaster reaches northern and western Taiwan.
