EARTHQUAKE WARNING SYSTEM
The National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering has just unveiled its newest earthquake early warning system that can give notifications up to 30 seconds before the quake hits. This advanced technology is expected to be incorporated into cell phones and in public facilities to help minimize future losses.
According to a government's study, Taiwan has been hit by devastating earthquakes every 15 to 20 years since 1736.
Over the last century, the average death toll caused by these earthquakes is over 70 people per year.
In order to buy more time for the public when earthquake hits, the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering has developed the first earthquake detection system that can issue warnings 7 to 27 seconds before a temblor strikes.
The new system analyzes the seismic energy waves generated during the initial stages of an earthquake to predict the magnitude and arrival time of the earthquake.
With the system, people around the epicenter would have around 10 seconds to react to the coming strike, while people in further areas will have up to 30 seconds.
The center hopes that the system can be incorporated into existing emergency evacuation procedures, as well as cell phone services and public facilities to prevent property and human losses.
