NUCLEAR EMERGENCY EXERCISES TO BE INCLUDED IN MILITARY DRILLS
The Ministry of Defense has confirmed that nuclear emergency exercises will be included in the military drills this year as part of an overall effort to improve the army's capability in managing a nuclear crisis.
The Fukushima nuclear disaster is causing tension in the domestic sector.
Some are questioning whether the Ministry of Defense and the National Security Bureau have the ability to cope with this sudden catastrophe and the resulting effects of radiation.
Minister of Defense Kao Hua-chu said that preventing a nuclear disaster and radiation pollution will be included in activities undertaken this year by soldiers and the National Security Bureau also acknowledged that their ability to protect against a nuclear disaster is really limited.
Including radiation equipment and radiation suits, as well as vehicles and other items the National Security Bureau says it currently does not have enough of these items as they will need more funding.
Also, they will need to send more personnel for nuclear disaster training.
As for protecting the president, the secret service center said there was a lack of nuclear and biochemical response equipment in the event of nuclear disaster.
This prompted some to ask how the president would be evacuated to the Hengshan command post?
Domestic soldiers specializing in cleaning up chemical waste have been reduced from 3,000 to 2,000.
Legislators wondered if these forces would be enough to cope with a potential disaster.
After the Japanese nuclear disaster, Taiwan's ability to prevent such a nuclear accident is being reviewed,
leading to lots of criticism with officials admitting that there is a lack of equipment as they will conduct a review of how to face and cope with such a disaster.
