Under growing public concerns over radioactive food from Japan, many local restaurants and supermarkets have already replaced Japanese food products with those from other sources such as the U.S. or Europe, trying to ease the fears of customers.

The supermarket featuring Japanese products still sells imported goods from the country, such as Miso paste, cheese sticks or marinated fish roe from Hokkaido.

But these products were already imported to Taiwan before the Japanese earthquake.

In the fresh seafood area, not many Japanese products can be seen here since the retailer switches to fish imported from Norway, Iceland and even Tungkang of Taiwan.

Fearing the radiation pollution on Japanese food ingredients, many hotels in Taiwan are replacing Japanese seafoods with those from local market or Europe.

While groceries are facing a shortage of quality Japanese seafood products, dried seaweed and scallops from Hokkaido, imported before the earthquake are selling fast.

According to the retailer, the wholesale prices are up by 20%, raising the prices of premium scallop to a record high in recent years, at NT$2,300 per catty.
