Three months ago, Hsiao Mei got her ears pierced at an accessories store. Shortly afterwards, her earlobes began swelling and producing pus.

Hsiao Mei followed the directions of the owner of the store and used the ointment she was given to treat the infection, but her condition only worsened.

When we tracked down the storeowner and told her of Hsiao Mei's situation, she again produced the same ointment and said that there was no need to seek medical attention.The woman claimed that the anti-inflammatory, anti-itch ointment can be used on the entire body, but was unable to list the ingredients in the ointment.

A dermatologist later revealed that the ointment was nothing more than Vaseline. Hsiao Mei fortunately had the good sense to see a doctor, and her infection has cleared up. However, she will always have protruding scars on her ears, and the piercings have closed up. She says that she has no desire to ever pierce her ears again.
