REACTION TO CHEN'S VISIT
In response to Chen's visit, three Kaohsiung city councilors issued an open letter to him yesterday, saying that while they welcome him as a guest, it is hoped that Chen will restrain himself from attempting to promote unification with China under the guise of cross-strait economic cooperation. Meanwhile, pro-independent groups are also planning to stage protests against Chen to make their voices heard.
Claiming to welcome ARATS chairman Chen Yunlin, DPP Kaohsiung city councilors Hsiao Yun-tah, Chen Chih-chung and Chen Cheng-wen released a joint statement, a public letter to the Chinese visitor.
They urge him to respect Taiwan's independent sovereignty and not try to politically reunify Taiwan.
Hsiao said he received an invitation from Eda Group on February 10th and he would attend the luncheon on the 24th to personally hand the letter to Chen.
The city councilors stress that there won't be any violent protests.
Instead they will rally hundreds to welcome Chen Yun-lin while holding jasmine flower in their hand to express their rational appeals.
Pro-independence groups launched an anti-Chen Yunlin action alliance, which is to stage two protests to express their opposition.
