A PARADISE FOR JOB SEEKERS
Kaohsiung used to be the city with the highest unemployment rate in Taiwan, but now it looks like a paradise for job seekers. According to a recent survey, about 3.8 jobs are available for each applicant in the city. And the local government hopes to attract more Kaohsiung natives who currently work elsewhere to rejoin the labor force of their hometown.
Although Kaohsiung City has Taiwan's highest unemployment rate, southern Taiwan is currently facing a worker shortage. A job fair with 2,000 vacant positions recently closed, and another with 4,000 openings is scheduled for this week.
According to statistics, there are currently 3.8 jobs available for every one job seeker. Job banks recently conducted a comprehensive survey of wages, benefits, working environments, and work hours to create a job happiness index, and northern Taiwan received 2.5 points more than southern Taiwan.
At the same time, southern Taiwan has the advantage in cost of living, weather, traffic, and overall happiness index.
Southern Taiwan has had a shortage of professional workers for many years, but experts say that Kaohsiung's industry is currently transitioning and that it will be able to attract more workers in the future.
Residents of southern Taiwan make around 50,000 NT less per year than workers in northern Taiwan, but cost of living is less in the south.
Analysts say that industry policy can help upgrade the industrial environment, and that southern Taiwan is looking up.
