IS THE ECONOMY REALLY GETTING BETTER?
The Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics has announced that Taiwan's unemployment rate for last December has dropped to 4.67 percent, which is a sign of economic turnaround. However, labor groups said the labor market is still deteriorating, the problem of the working poor is not getting better, and the number of temporary and dispatched workers still remains high.
The unemployment rate of last December dropped to 4.67%.
But according to Taiwan Labor Front, what can best represent labors in 2011 is the term "working poor."
While the government emphasizes the economy is picking up and the unemployment rate slides, labor groups believe the government simply chooses to ignore bad news such as the labor wages cannot catch up with inflation and the unemployment rate for college grads continues to rise.
Lawmaker Huang Shu-ying says Taiwanese labors are in a less enviable position than their counterparts in other countries.
According to the statistics, around 1.03 million people make less than 20,000 NTD per month.
The employment market is worsening, with the rising number of temp workers and dispatched labor workers.
But the government didn't mention this to the public.
Therefore, labor advocates urge the government to propose a total solution that would stop things from getting worse.
