Eye Wash Side Effects
The Consumers' Foundation has discovered that many eye wash solutions on the shelves may not be suitable for excessive use. Eye doctors are also warning that these washing products may lead to serious side effects, while blinking and resting your eyes may just be the safest way to keep your eyes healthy.
Ms. Chen wears contacts, and often ends up with make-up residue or dust particles in her eyes.
Therefore, she uses eye wash solutions to clean her eyes.
According to the Consumers Foundation, the indications on the six Department of Health-certified eye wash solutions available on the market all say that the solutions can be used up to six times a day.
Because some of the products contain preservatives or even antibiotics, long-term or excessive use of eye wash solutions can lead to a number of side effects, including dry eye, keratitis, and eye ulcers.
Ophthalmologist Lin Lung-kuang, who operates an eye clinic, says that he stopped performing eye washes a long time ago, and that eye washes are unnecessary unless a foreign object needs to be flushed out.
Experts say that blinking the eyes often will ensure even distribution of tears over the surface of the eyes, and that resting the eyes periodically can keep them healthy.
