To Toll or Not to Toll
Residents in Keelung City are planning to launch a protest, calling for the government to abolish the toll booths at Shizhi and Chidu. They believe that it's unfair for them to pay for the short route into Taipei City, and that they should enjoy the same benefits as residents in Taipei County.
Keelung City is looking to abolish the toll booths at Shizhi and Chidu, and its residents are fully supporting it.
Keelung City Mayor Chang Tungrung said traffic to the city was better after the landslide on the No.3 freeway temporary shut down the Hsichih toll booth.
Large trucks have been using the No.1 freeway instead.
But although the distance between Taipei and Keelung is short, there are tool booths on both the No.1 and No.3 freeway.
Compared to Xindian and other satellite cities around Taipei, there aren't any toll booths. This is especially unfair to Keelung residents.
Thus, he is seeking to abolish the toll booths.
The Transportation Ministry said the toll booths only collect in one direction right now, so there shouldn't be a fairness question. Additionally, the Ministry is looking to establish a new program of paying for as many distance as you drive.
In the future, drivers in this electronic paying program only pay for the amount of distance they drive.
Although Chang said this new program is fair, he said his city's current residents are still being treated unfairly right now before the new program comes online.
The Ministry is afraid if it gives in to Keelung's request, other cities would also seek to abolish toll booths.
Mayor Chang said he would not rule out hosting a march to voice Keelung's concerns after the elections.
