Also in legal news, the controversial murder case of the Hsichih Trio, which has lasted for nearly 20 years, took a new turn on Friday as Taiwan's high court acquitted the three defendants, overturning an earlier verdict of death sentence. But the case may still be appealed.

The Supreme Court has issued their verdict for the second trial, declaring defendants Su Jian-he, Liu Bing-lang, and Chuang Lin-xun innocent.

The three walked out of the court to cheers from civil rights groups.

After hearing the verdict, the three defendants bowed and thanked the judge.

Turning to their lawyer, the three remarked that although the verdict took a slow 20 years, they are finally vindicated.

In the 1991 Wu Ming-han lawsuit case, four people were brought to trial.

In 1992, defendant Wang Wen-jiao was executed by martial law.

The other three were sentenced to death by the Supreme Court.

After several unsuccessful appeals, Su's lawyer made another attempt in 2003 in which the three were declared innocent.

However, in 2007, the Supreme Court changed their verdict and reverted back to the death sentence.

Through a report by forensics specialist Henry Lee, the three defendants were able to reclaim their innocence.

After hearing the sentence, family and relatives of the victim in the case expressed they will appeal.

Support groups and the defense council all hope that prosecutors will give up on the appeal.

At the same time, they are urging the Ministry of Law to push out amendments to issue consolation packages and compensation for the family of crime victims.
