Chen's Son Deplores Verdict
Meanwhile, the son of Chen reacted much more vehemently to the verdict, condemning the jail sentence on his handicapped mother as an act of cruelty against a "withering old woman."
Standing on top of a campaign truck, Chen Chih-chung condemned the judicial system as "unjust," and said that the Supreme Court's verdict is nothing short of a death sentence for his mother.
Shortly afterwards, he began trying to rally his supporters, who claimed that they had cried all night upon hearing of Chen Shui-bian and Wu Shu-chen's sentences.
Chen Hsing-yu, who has not made a public appearance in some time, was seen reacting to the news by violently slamming doors, while her sister-in-law, Huang Jui-ching, cried.
Chen Shui-bian's mother, meanwhile, had a solemn look on her face as she read the newspaper in her Tainan hometown.
Although the Supreme Court has found the former first couple guilty of corruption, the Chen family says that Wu cannot possibly be incarcerated due to her alleged health issues.
