Public Housing Debate
In a recent meeting of the Legislative Yuan's Finance Committee, the newly proposed public housing project was criticized by a DPP lawmaker as part of the government's plan to unfairly influence the election. But such an accusation was firmly denied by top economic official Christina Liu.
With only 2 weeks left in the 5 municipal elections, the Ma government has actively promoted public housing proposals.
However, the Legislative Yuan's Finance Committee member and DPP Legislator Kao Jyh-peng questioning the ruling party as launching these proposals to win votes in the election.
CEPD Minister, Christina Liu was involved in a war of words with legislators.
Liu repeatedly stressed that the implementation of the public housing policy is not intended to suppress the housing market, but provide disadvantaged groups with living spaces.
Scholars such as National Chengchi University Professor, Chang Chin-E who mentioned that public housing should not inhibit Taipei metropolitan area's high prices.Scholars said that at present, the vacancy rate in Taipei is about 230,000 households and if the government wishes to use cheap rentals to disadvantaged groups, it won't have to go far away to build new housing.
It simply needs to be determined to solve the problem of empty units as it could solve both problems in one simple action.
