Agency Fee Too High?
The number of Indonesian laborers in Taipei has reached 25,000, and what do they feel about working on the island? While most think Taiwanese employers respect their culture, many feel that the agency fee is out of range. They are hoping that the government will step in to regulate those who are taking a huge cut from their paychecks.
This Sunday, many migrant workers from Southeast Asia gather at the Peace Park, enjoying their one-day off by watching the traditional Indonesian performance.
Even though all seems well on the surface, there have been incidents of employers forcing their Muslim workers to eat pork or unfair treatments in the past.
But what really is unfair, according to the workers, has got to be the overcharging agency fee, which takes most of their wages away every month.
So far in Taipei City, there are more than 25,000 migrant workers from Indonesia and the number is climbing.
And although there are events such as this held for the migrant workers by the Department of Labor in Taipei, what they really hope is actually for the department to set a cap on agency fee so that their hard work won't be exploited in the future.
