While most people know there is a constant need for donated blood, few may be aware that the need for platelets, the blood component that helps to stop bleeding, is even more urgent. Concerned with the problem, a young doctor in Taoyuan has become a frequent donor of platelets himself, making 280 donations over the last ten years.

Taking off his robe, this doctor shows his arm as we take a closer look as see that doctor Chang Sung Hao's two arms all scars from needles as he has donated much blood to help people.

He has not relied upon other people's donations as they all come from him and he has given 280 times over the past ten years.

It is not normal blood donation but that of platelets which require two hours to complete.

There is a platelet shortage at hospitals as Dr. Chang is quite brave to donate platelets.

A normal blood donation bag is 250CC and may require just 15 minutes to complete.

But to donate platelets one has to endure a two hour procedure as he has taken the trouble to donate the best possible platelets as he avoids greasy food and undertakes sustained exercise every day.

Even his hospital colleagues marveled at his contribution. Dr Chang said he is happy to see so many enthusiastic people donating blood.

As for his own donations numbering 280 times. He says he has enough blood and as long as he is healthy he will continue to donate.
