Schumann with Nanguan
East meets west in this year's Taipei Arts Festival. In celebration of German composer Robert Schumann's 200th birth anniversary, the master's works will be matched with traditional Chinese music and poetry in a series of unique concerts, and the audiences are in for an extraordinary feast of art.
Wang Xin-xin is one of this generation's most highly-regarded nanguan musicians, and she will be taking part in her first cross-genre musical production this fall.
Renowned conductor Chien Wen-pin will be setting his baton down to accompany Wang and German tenor Tilman Lichdi in a series of concerts during the Taipei Arts Festival.
The text for Robert Schumann's "The Poet's Love," which was written by German Romantic Poet Heinrich Heine, perfectly complements Chinese lyrics.
When Schumann is combined with nanguan, the result is a timeless lovers' concert.
2010 is the 200th anniversary of Schumann's birth, and "Timeless Love" will honor his memory with an east-west dialogue.
