Veggie Price Sunburnt
Expect to pocket out more money for vegetables this summer.
The greens around the island have been ruined because of the high temperature, sending the prices of the crops to its most expensive point.
The big chayote farm was supposed to be green and ready for harvest.
But now it has been ruined by the hot weather for days.
The phenomenon lowers vegetable production volume and sends the prices up.
In traditional markets, despite vendors' effort to lure customers, there are not many shoppers, since vegetable prices have risen to the peak of the same period in five years.
Especially for leafy greens, they are almost rotten due to the changing weather from heavy torrential rains to high temperature.
The wholesale price of spinach was NT$35 per kilogram, now NT$50.
The biggest price increase is recorded in baby bok choy, which sees a 170% increase.
Besides leafy vegetables, prices for spices, such as garlic, pepper and ginger are up by 200%.
This hot weather has affected farmers, vendors, and soon restaurant businesses.
