BETTER FUTURE FOR LIBYA?
After the celebrations comes the new government. A day after Libya declared the end the the Gaddafi era discussions are underway about Libya's next interim government with a decision expected in a matter of weeks. Head of the National Transitional Council Mustafa Abdel Jalil spoke in Benghazi. Head of the National Transitional Council Mustafa Abdel Jalil: "Yes, it will not take a month at all, this would be done within only two weeks from now.
" Abdel Jalil, who on Sunday said Libya had taken Islamic sharia law as its source of legislation, tried to allay fears that the country may drift towards religious extremism. Abdel Jalil: "I want to assure the international community that we as Libyans are moderate Muslims,"
His comments came while hundreds of people viewed the rotting corpse of former leader Muammar Gaddafi -- a practice that was stopped on Monday.
NTC officials say negotiations are going on with Gaddafi's tribal kinsmen from Sirte and within the interim leadership over where and how to dispose of the body. Abdel Jalil: "As for the body of Muammar Gaddafi, the National Council made the decision to form a committee concerning this purpose, and the measures that are outlined in the fatwa of the Mufti office, will be taken." With big oil and gas reserves, Libya has the potential to become very prosperous. But analysts also warn regional rivalries fostered by Gaddafi could erupt into yet more violence.
