"REAL STEEL" CLAIMS VICTORY AT NO.1
Hugh Jackman's new flick "Real Steel" scored an easy victory over other new releases this past weekend as the robots punched their way to the top of the box office.
"Real Steel" raked in an estimated 27.3 million US dollars in 19 foreign markets this weekend, making a 49.4 million-US-dollar global debut.
With mixed but generally positive reviews from critics, the film is expected to continue to bring in more movie goers in the weeks to come.
Opening in second place was the political thriller, "The Ides of March," with a not-so-satisfying 10.4 million US dollar ticket sale.
Even with very good reviews from critics, the election film starring Ryan Gosling, and George Clooney, who also directed the film, did not attract audiences as expected. The Sony release received only a B grade from CinemaScore.
Last weekend's winner Dolphin Tale eased 34 percent to 9.13 million US dollars for a total of 49 million US dollars at number three. It's total earnings are still slightly behind Brad Pitt's flick, "Moneyball," which dipped 38 percent to 7.45 million US dollars for a total of 49.2 million US dollars.
The cancer comedy 50/50 enjoyed the best hold among last weekend's four new releases dipping only 36% to an estimated 5.5 million US dollars.
The Summit release has collected a modest 17.3 million US dollars in ten days and hopes to reach the 30 million US dollar mark.
Starred by Daniel Craig, Rachel Weiz, and Naomi Watts, Universal's Dream House dropped 45% after its lousy debut to an estimated $4.5M for a ten-day tally of only $14.5M, at No. 8. Apparently, the combined stars still failed to save "Dream House" from its awful box office results.
