AUSTERITY MEASURES PASSED IN GREECE
Clashes continued to break out in Athen between protesters and the police on Thursday, the second day of the national strike against a new round of budget-cutting measures. A union member died and many were wounded during the protest.
One union vowed to encircle parliament in an attempt to prevent lawmakers from accessing the building for the vote on spending cuts and tax hikes required by Greece's international creditors.
Despite the massive demonstration, lawmakers approved the austerity measures by 154 in favor to 144 against, as Greece faces the crisis of running out of money in mid-November if without the next installment of 8 billion euros.
The new measures include paycuts, staff cuts in civil service as well as pension cuts and tax hikes for all Greeks.
