Many people would prefer drinks with half amount of sugar when buying freshly-made drinks from tea shops. However, we are telling you that according to a recent survey, doing so won't help control your calorie intake, because even the drink with half amount of sugar still contains calories that equals to around 10 sugar cubes. When buying drinks, many people would ask tea shops to add less sugar in their drinks for health concerns. Some consumers said that drinks with "normal" amount of sugar is too sweet and it makes them thirsty, while some weight conscious consumers believe that too much sugar will exceed the recommended daily calorie intake. However, according to a recent research on the island's three major tea shop chains, even the drinks labeled with "lower amount of sugar" actually contain a more sugar than many people have expected. For instance, 500 c.c. of Koi Cafe's plum green tea contain around 50g of sugar, which is around 10 sugar cubes and around 160 calories. The juices sold in CoCo Tea contain around 56g of sugar, which equals to 11.2 sugar cubes. Averagely speaking, the drinks in Koi Cafe contain the most sugar, with its green milk tea, pudding milk tea and pearl milk tea all contain more than 15 sugar cubes, which is around 240 calories. However, eating too much sugar may bring potential health problems to one's cardiovascular system. In response to the potential health hazards caused by over-consumption of sugar, Koi Cafe's sales representative said that the tea shop always asks its customers if they want less sugar in their drinks. "Our sales person always asks customers if they want to make adjustment in the sugar content. Customers can even ask to add 10 percent or 20 percent of the average sugar content in their drinks. We provide a wide range of sugar contents for customers to choose from." However, dieticians said that the recommended daily sugar intake is around 45g, which is around 9 sugar cubes. Too much intake of sugar may cause large waistline, which can increase the occurrence of diabetes in younger people, and increase the chances of getting cardiovascular diseases." With a bowl of rice being equivalent to 12 sugar cubes, the intake of sugar will exceed the recommended amount if one drinks sugar containing drinks in addition to regular meals. Dieticians suggest that people can choose to drink sugar-free milk tea, lemonade or coffee, to avoid over-consumption of sugar.
