According to the Department of Health, lung cancer ranks the number-one cause of death for Taiwanese women, and the second leading cause of death for Taiwanese men, while doctors say that they're seeing more severe cases with Asian patients, even for non-smokers. It is widely known that smokers have greater risks of getting lung cancer than those who don't smoke. However, according to the research of Taiwan Lung Cancer Society, exposure to air or water pollution, radiation, and a family history of lung cancer may all be the possible cause of the disease. It is also found that the disease deteriorates even more significantly in Asian patients. Based on the data provided by the Department of Health in 2009, lung cancer has been the top one cause of death for women, and the second for men in Taiwan, with around 22 people dying of lung cancer every day. In addition, around 70 % of the patients have stage 3 lung cancer at the time of diagnosis, while many of them are non-smokers. Doctors said that the data shows that there are other factors influencing the occurrence of lung cancer. "It is confirmed that the herbicide used by the U.S. during the Vietnam War affect the lung function. Some medical reports show that herbicides will harm the lungs, as well as causing fibrosis in lungs. However, we don't know if it will cause lung cancer."
