LABORERS VENT FRUSTRATION AGAINST GOVERNMENT
On April 28th, which is recognized as the International Workers Memorial Day, a group of labor representatives launched a demonstration in front of the Department of Health, to protest against the government's inability in protecting the health and well-being of workers.
The protesters even performed a workout session in the street to mock the authorities' failure in delivering their promises to the laborers.
Labor groups cluster in front of the Department of Health and the Bureau of Health Promotion's decision about long-term work related fatigue leading to death.
Labor groups said the government is passing the buck, saying the health of workers is mainly due to lack of exercise or poor diets.
They say it has nothing to do with work, as long-term fatigue could lead to loss of memory as this doctor,
surnamed Tsai joined the protest with his wife saying the DOH had been indifferent.
The Industrial Injury Association said the Department of Health is promoting a stop smoking and exercise program, but is not working to improve employment conditions as they sited the DOH as being derelict in its operations.
After protesting for an hour, one mother surnamed Chiang, delivered a petition to the DOH as she suspected long hours of work led to the death of her son.
April 28 is International Workers Memorial Day, and the Industrial Injury Association appealed to the DOH to should establish a mandatory occupational hazards and occupational disease reporting system.
They also offered other ideas such a health tax to be levied on enterprises and criminal prosecution for those who violate the law.
