In response to the plasticizer scandal that triggered public panic over beverages and the like, the Legislature has passed the amendment to the law governing food safety, raising the punishment of imprisonment to seven years, as well as a fine up to 10 million NT dollars. The Legislature has passed the amendment to the law governing food safety last week, which means that in the future, food manufacturers who add harmful or toxic substances into foods will face a fine up to 6 million NT dollars, while the authorities can suspend the manufacturer's business license. In addition, those who knowingly make such an offense will face imprisonment of up to seven years or a 10-million NT dollar fine. The punishment will be reduced to imprisonment of up to one year and fines of up to NT$6 million for those who unwittingly committing such crime. Currently, manufacturers of five food categories -- soft drinks, juices, tea drinks, fruit jam or syrups, or dietary supplements in tablet or powder are required to provide certification which proves that their products are safe to consume before putting their products on the shelves. To help restore public confidence in food safety, President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Wu Den-Yih travelled to Changhua County to witness the destruction of 12 ton of plasticizer-contaminated food products as the disposal is also jointly carried out in other municipalities to ensure that tainted food does not enter the market.
