MANAGING CANCER-RELATED FATIGUE
According to a recent study by the Formosa Cancer Foundation, nearly 70 percent of cancer patients are troubled by cancer-related fatigue, a kind of side effect of cancer treatment.
Doctors suggest that once the symptoms of cancer-related fatigue appears, patients are advised to seek medical help, while maintaining sufficient intake of nutrients, and adequate exercise.
Cancer can launch a great impact to patients, and both physical and mental variables may affect patients' will to live.
Based on Formosa Cancer Foundation's latest research, nearly 70 percent of cancer patients suffer from cancer-related fatigue, with symptoms hard to be alleviated through sleeping or resting.
Around 30 percent of the patients troubled by the problem said that fatigue is even more difficult to cope with than hair loss, or vomiting that come along with the agonizing treatment.
Among the patients, one out of three would rather give up their therapy because of the problem.
The so-called "cancer-related fatigue" is one of the most commonly seen side effects of cancer and its treatment.
It is a physical, mental and cognitive exhaustion caused by cancer treatment, and the symptoms usually last for a long period of time, even after the treatment.
The severity varies based on the type of cancer, complications, treatments, or the disease progression.
Complications such as anxiety, depression, anemia or insomnia are oftentimes inter-affected with symptoms of cancer-related fatigue, making the problem even more difficult to be diagnosed and treated.
Doctors said that cancer-related fatigue may affect patients ability to move around or walk, and gradually take away their strength to undertake daily jobs, or even their ability to eat.
Therefore, doctors suggest that once symptoms of cancer-related fatigue start to show, patients should seek medical help as early as possible.
Cancer patients suffering from cancer-related fatigue are advised to maintain adequate intake of nutrients, calories, protein and vitamins, along with sufficient exercise to help alleviate the symptoms.
