TYPHOID OUTBREAK IN HSINCHU
The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed a rare typhoid outbreak in the Hsinchu area. Four diners suffered from similar symptoms after eating from the same restaurant. After an investigation, the result shows that the owner of the business is actually a typhoid carrier herself, who did not experience any signs of the disease. The infected individual has been given medications for it, and is currently being quarantined.
Four diners, including three Hsinchu Science and Technology Park workers, ate takeout from this Southeast Asian eatery on April 7th.
All four later developed fevers and severe diarrhea, and were eventually diagnosed with typhoid.
Based on the patients' dining records, the Centers for Disease Control tracked the outbreak back to the Indonesian eatery.
The proprietor of the restaurant, an Indonesia native, was found to be an asymptomatic typhoid carrier.
She is currently being treated in quarantine, and the eatery has been closed for the time being.
According to the CDC, typhoid is common across Southeast Asia and travelers should be careful when traveling in the region.
Typhoid is mainly transmitted via raw food or food contaminated by a carrier, and can be prevented by washing hands frequently and good hygiene.
