SIDEWALK COLLAPSE CAUSED BY TAIPOWER TRUCK
A sidewalk in Kaohsiung sank on Thursday after a Taipower utility truck was driven on it, leaving a hole measuring two meters long and one meter deep.
The driver was quick to blame the accident on the poor construction quality of the pavement. But local authorities countered that the it was never designed to sustain the weight of a truck.
This Taiwan Power construction truck, which was filled with generators and tools, became lodged in a giant hole in the sidewalk after its driver drove over the sidewalk.
The driver, who was on his way to a job, decided to park on the sidewalk to avoid blocking traffic.
Shortly afterwards, the sidewalk collapsed, leaving behind a 2-meter long, 1-meter deep hole.
The driver is blaming the accident on shoddy public construction, but investigators from the Kaohsiung City Public Works Bureau's Maintenance Office concluded that the sidewalk was designed only for pedestrians and scooters, and that the truck should not have been on it.
The truck, with its cargo, weighed 3.9 tons, and the Kaohsiung City Government believes that the accident was caused by Taiwan Power's negligence.
Taiwan Power has sent workers to repair the sidewalk, which should be restored in two days.
