TAIWAN NOT READY FOR DISASTER?
Following Japan's recent announcement to shut down its Hamaoka nuclear plant, Taipower has since completed its examination over the three power plants in Taiwan. To no surprise, it indicates that the stations are not able to withstand tsunamis and earthquakes of similar magnitude.
After the nuclear crisis in Japan, Taipower carried out a comprehensive nuclear safety check-up in the country's power plants.
According to the reports, the first, second and third nuclear power plants fail to have the ability to protect themselves against possible tsunami attack.
Efforts should be made to enhance the earthquake-proof ability of other machineries, the report said.
It is indicated in the report that if a similar crisis of Fukushima happens, in which the reactor remains at high temperatures.
The management should make a decisive move and resort to an emergency operation by reducing the pressure and using water for cooling, in order to prevent the similar crisis from happening in Taiwan.
Taipower is also having a research on the seismic activities as a reference for enhancing the earthquake-proof efforts.
According to the Atomic Energy Council, it hopes to make sure nuclear safety through mid-term and long-term study on faults and it will have an opinion exchange with Taipower.
Within one week at the soonest, a press conference will be convened to explain the report the public.
