KMT'S NOMINATION CONUNDRUM
While the KMT is facing a shortage of potential legislative candidates in southern Taiwan, it has the opposite problem in the north. At least two KMT lawmakers said they insist on running for re-election despite having lost in the primaries, but that may lead to a split of pan blue votes and eventually benefit the other competitors.
Taipei City Councilor Lee Yen-hsiu was the only candidate to register for the KMT's legislative primaries in Taipei City's District 4, and received an average approval rating of 45.67% in public opinion polls.
Current District 4 legislator Tsai Cheng-yuan is currently battling legal troubles and failed to register for the primaries, but says that he will still run.
The KMT will therefore have to find a way to resolve the situation before the third wave of nominations on May 25th.
In order to be nominated by the party, candidates must first garner an approval rating of at least 30%.
In Taoyuan County's District 3, former legislator Chen Hsueh-sheng received an approval rating of 54.34%, which was 9% more than current legislator Cheng Chin-ling.
However, Cheng is refusing to pull out of the race. The KMT is also facing problems in southern Taiwan, where no candidates have registered for a number of districts in Tainan and Kaohsiung.
The party has therefore had to recruit candidates, and is hoping former Minister without Portfolio Kao Su-po will run in Tainan's District 4 and former Taipei City Department of Labor Commissioner Su Yin-kuei will run in Kaohsiung's District 9.
The second wave of legislative nominations includes Luo Shu-lei in Taipei City's District 3 and Cheng Ju-fen in Changhua County's District 3.
The nomination process is expected to be finalized by the KMT's Central Standing Committee on the 11th at the earliest.
