The legislative review of amendments to the Public Television Act started earlier this week, with a total of three versions proposed for discussion.

Consensus still seemed out of reach at this point, and the absence of GIO minister, Johnny Chiang, who has been on leave in preparation for the upcoming legislative race, triggered an unexpected debate during the meeting.

Public Television Law was declared in 1997 and has been slightly amended twice.

However, facing the trend of digital convergence, there's a need to substantially amend the law. The Executive Yuan, DPP legislator Guan Bi-lin and KMT legislator Guo Su-chung have proposed their version of the law amendment.

But before entering the review procedure, some legislators have questioned the legality of GIO minister Johnny Chiang, who's going to leave office to run the legislative election on behalf of the KMT.

Some legislators suggest to review the law amendment at some other time.

Chairperson of the meeting Guan Bi-lin, says that the amendment of the Public Television Law has been long anticipated. The versions of the Executive Yuan and legislators are differed in the position of five television channels under the PTS group.

Given the huge discrepancy, the meeting is expected to last two days to review the contents of different law amendment proposals.
