HU UNDER FIRE AFTER DEADLY BLAZE
The deadly fire that took nine lives at a Taichung nightclub early Sunday has caused a political storm in the city. On Monday, the DPP caucus in the council staged an impromptu protest during a budget review session, urging Mayor Jason Hu to step down and take full responsibility for the tragedy.
DPP city councilors went to the chairman podium and held a white banner, asking Taichung city mayor Jason Hu to show up in the council.
Not to be outdone, KMT city councilors accused the DPP of taking the advantage to put on a show.
The Taichung city council convened this morning and the focus was on the nightclub fire which took place on Sunday.
DPP city councilors even asked the mayor to take political responsibilities.
Some councilors question the legitimacy of carrying out safety inspection on new equipments under old codes and whether some civil servants performed the job properly.
DPP city councilors requested that Jason Hu be suspended and under investigation, in the same fashion that former Taichung mayor Li Bor-rong did when the Wei Er-kang restaurant was on fire.
The nightclub fire Sunday killed 9 and injured 12.
Now it is confirmed that the service operators performed illegal fire-wielding show and violated the code of business in residential area.
While the city government stressed the club passed the fire safety checks, the prosecutors are to launch an intense investigation.
