With the serious situation on their hands in Japan, here in Taiwan, residents are mostly concerned about the negative impact that the radiation leakage may bring to people on the island. The Atomic Energy Council is reassuring the public that we have little to fear, given the distance and the wind direction, we would not need to evacuate or take iodide pills for the time-being.

According to the Atomic Energy Council, Japan's nuclear crisis has had little impact on Taiwan.

Currently, the highest radiation level that has been measured in Taiwan is 0.1 mSv/h.

According to experts, one would have to be exposed to radiation levels of 0.2 mSv/hr for 50,000 consecutive hours to equal the amount of radiation exposure during a CT scan.

The AEC is trying to reassure the public and prevent panic, but news reports of nuclear meltdowns in Japan are keeping Taiwan residents on edge.

At the same time, the AEC has temporarily halted assessment reviews at Taiwan's First Nuclear Power Plant aimed at determining whether an extension of the plant's life span is a feasible option.
