In response to the unfolding crisis in Japan, President Ma Ying-jeou summoned an emergency national security meeting on Sunday to devise strategies against potential natural disasters as well as various threats to nuclear safety.

After Japan was hit by the destructive earthquake, President Ma Ying-jeou cancelled his visit to Taitung and directed a national security meeting at the Presidential Office to discuss how Taiwan will cope with situations such as earthquake, tsunami and nuclear leak,

as well as the impact of Japan's devastating disasters could have on Taiwan's economy.

During the two-hour meeting, the Atomic Energy Council emphasized that it is unlikely that the leak of Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant will affect Taiwan, however, the Council is fully prepared if there's an emergency.

The Council said that it will enhance the inspection and alarm system on agricultural products from Japan, and will notify Council of Agriculture for further import sanction if those products are found contaminated by radiation leaks.

President Ma also stressed that Taiwan should learn from Japan's experience in handling natural disasters and establish a more comprehensive disaster response procedure.

The government is also studying the feasibility of warning the public through text messages when earthquake or tsunami hits the island, to prevent greater losses.
