President Ma Ying-jeou recently created his own Facebook page in order to keep up with the times and connect with Internet users. And netizens are generally supportive of the national leader's new attempt. More than 200,000 users have registered as Ma's fans on the first day alone.

President Ma has jumped on the bandwagon and signed up for a Facebook account, personally typing every blog entry and interacting with online fans.

Within 24 hours of signing up for the account, Ma's Facebook profile garnered fifty thousand "likes" and four thousand comments on his "wall."

The Presidential Palace does not deny that Ma opened a Facebook account to better know the public's opinion, which will help serve as a reference for his administration.

As Facebook has increasingly become a dominant medium of communication, politicans who signed up for Facebook include not only Ma, but also DPP chair Tsai Ing-wen who signed up for an account well over a year ago.
