DISPUTE OVER WETLAND USE IN TAIPEI
Academia Sinica is responsible for developing the National Biotechnology Research Park on the military's 202 amunitions depot. However, as the project is located near an important wetland location, environmental groups are now protesting against it.
This piece was originally owned by the military, the 202 munitions depot as writer Chang Hsiao-feng describes it as the last piece of natural area in Taipei City.
There is a plan to develop it into a National Biotechnology Research Park, drawing protests from environmental groups. Academia Sinica has been asked to supply additional documents in 2 EIA assessments.
The last review will take place in May with a recent event hosted Academia Sinica and the writers like Chang Hsiao-feng and NGOs hoping to clear the air.
Academical Sinica's Wong Chi-huey emphasized the biotech park development project and the Kuo Kuang Petrochemical Plant are much different.
He said that 10 municipalities welcomed the project, with a decision made based upon convenient transportation.
Also, working with the NankangTechnology Incubation Center and the National Institutes of Health have helped decide upon the location.
The NationalBiotechnology Park development project will be sent to the EIA General Assembly in June, with Wong confident the plan will pass. He also added, that if it did not pass, the project will not be built here.
