NO MORE FUN ALLOWED AT GRADUATIONS?
With graduations set to take place soon and to avoid the significant event of becoming a playground for students, the Ministry of Education is laying down the rules to set regulations on conducting proper ceremonies. However, this move has sparked various criticisms, indicating that it is interfering with the freedom of the schools.
Last year, a school's criticized for dressing up as a ballerina and dancing at the graduation ceremony.
Former president of National Chi Nan University Professor,
Lee Chia- Tung has once criticized that graduation ceremonies have become parties, and all the students want is to have fun.
He believes that graduation ceremonies should be modest. Regarding the criticism, the Ministry of Education has announced its new regulation for graduation ceremonies, which stipulates that ceremonies should be conducted to review the student's life at schools, to appreciate teacher's teaching and to bless the graduates.
However, MOE's regulation has sparked another criticism for over-intervening schools' autonomy. In response, Ministry of Education said that the regulation is only to remind the schools the feature of graduation ceremonies.
Some schools said that the regulation provides a guideline for schools to follow when organizing graduation ceremonies, while some students and teachers think that the ceremony belongs to the graduates, and should let students decides what they want the ceremony to be.
Some parent groups also said that the MOE should remind the schools to pay attention to the safety of the ceremonies, and avoid unnecessary tricks or speeches by politicians or government officials.
