PRESIDENT MA MEETS WITH PROTESTERS
President Ma Ying-jeou has made an appearance at the fundraising lunch, organized by individuals who are against the construction of the Kuokuang Petrochemical plant.
President Ma refused to give a promise on paper to the protesters in stopping the project, saying that he would take their voices into consideration before making a decision.
Both DPP presidential candidates, Su Tseng-chang and Tsai Ing-wen also attended the event, with both of them reiterating their disapproval over the proposal.
Amidst yelling and protesting, President Ma Ying-jeou walked through the crowd in booth decorated with various anti-Kuokuang banners. President Ma sat next to the podium, when representatives from medical society expressed their strong opposition against the project.
When President Ma Ying-jeou walked up to the podium, he was immediately called upon by the crowd to sign a letter promising the government would stop the Kuokuang Project.
When Ma refused to do so, he was interrupted by the audiences and was not able to speak. Ma said that he was here to listen to people's opinion over the project, but the crowd just wouldn't let him talk.
Meanwhile, DPP presidential candidates Su Tseng-chang and Tsai Ing-wen also made rare appearances together, arriving within 10 minutes of each other. Even though the three major presidential candidates appeared in the same event, they didn't much interacted with each other.
Su Tseng-chang said that even though the project was approved by former DPP administration, however, it was the Ma administration that decided to construct the plant on the wetland in Changhua area. It is a huge mistake for the Ma administration. Tsai also urged President Ma Ying-jeou to take up the responsibility as a country's leader.
President Ma said that he will ask the Environmental Protection Administration to closely monitor the pollutes in air, while asking the Construction and Planning Agency to evaluate the feasibility to include the three wetlands in Changhua area in the list of the nation's important wetlands.
With the three presidential candidates all attending the event, the Kuokuang Petrochemical project is definitely another important issue to be debated over during the coming presidential election.
