ON THE BALCONY
With the living area relatively smaller in the city, we try to utilize our space wisely. Here on CTS, let's find out why this individual hardly goes to the supermarket for groceries, because he has a vegetable garden, not in his own backyard but on his balcony.
Yen Lo-sheng lives on the eighth floor of his building, and plants eight types of vegetables, including garlic chives and cabbage, on his balcony.
Yen says that it isn't difficult to plant vegetables on balconies, and that little more is required than providing the plants with nutrients and water. He only uses organic fertilizer, and fine nets help to protect the plants.
Aphids can be found on the cabbages because Yen doesn't use pesticides, but he knows that his vegetables are safe to eat.
The Tainan City Government recently opened a community garden in a vacant lot, and the project has been received extremely well by city residents.
Gardening has become an alternative hobby for many, and adds a note of simplicity to their lives.
More and more people are leasing plots of land outside the city and becoming weekend farmers, but Yen proves that one can become a "happy farmer" with just a balcony.
