LANTERN FEST ENDS IN SUCCESS
The 2011 Taiwan Lantern Festival has ended successfully following this long weekend, with the one-day count topping 1.54 million visitors. In an attempt to maintain order of the massive crowd, 70 police officers were dispatched to the Jhunan Railway Station.
The Jhunan Railway Station was so packed with people.
It took nearly 20 minutes for passengers to walk from the station entrance to the platform.
The old man even had an asthma attack because the huge crowd surrounding him made him unable to breathe.
Some people describe the scene as if they were fleeing from some kind of disasters and the situation was completely out of control.
However, it was difficult for the ambulance get to the old man through the crowd.
The massive crowd had also caused severe traffic congestion and disturbed the bus schedule because buses just couldn't get into the bus station.
One family said they had to wait for more than two hours before they tried to leave the venue.
From the videos of Jhunan Railway Station's surveillance, crowds started to swarm in at 6 o' clock in the evening.
Visitors were complaining about the traffic jams and crowd congestion at the venue, while the train station director believed that it was because the event was successful.
He said that there were over 100,000 people arriving the station the previous day.
To avoid the crowd congestion in the evening, some visitors chose to see the lantern exhibition during the day.
On Saturday alone, the lantern festival attracted over 1.54 million people, a single-day record high for the event.
To prevent the severe traffic congestion from happening again, event organizer had asked the railway administration to provide more trains as well as arranging extra 40 shuttle busses and 70 police officers to help alleviate congestion.
