THE LINK BETWEEN DIET AND COLON CANCER
According to the latest research, there is one person in Taiwan diagnosed with colon cancer every 50 minutes, while over 90 percent of the cases are developed from a polyp in colon. With more and more incidences of colon cancer happening to younger people, experts are reminding the public to consult their doctors if they have symptoms and signs such as changes in bowel habits or blood in stools.
Sixty-year-old Mr. Lee enjoys planting flowers, taking care of his pet birds, and adopts a healthy eating habit, which was why it came as a great shock to him when he was diagnosed with colon cancer five years ago.
Colon cancer isn't just plaguing the elderly; it's affecting some younger folks, as well.
For two consecutive years, 30-year-old Ms. Huang excreted blood whenever she used the toilet.
Ms. Huang initially chalked it up to hemorrhoids, but an inspection found that she had a polyp, which developed into stage 0 colon cancer.
According to the Department of Health, colon cancer is the highest occurring disease amongst Taiwanese locals.
In approximately every 50 minutes, one person will have been diagnosed with colon cancer.
The age range is typically around 50 years old, with women and men having equal likelihood of developing the cancer.
Other cases are similar to Ms. Huang's, where patients erroneously attribute symptoms to chronic diseases and do not seek necessary medical attention.
Bloody stool can in fact be a precursor to colon cancer.
Polyp growths are usually painless, and besides traces of blood in stool, there are rarely any other evident symptoms.
Medical experts are advising the public to maintain a balanced diet of vegetables and fruits and adopt exercising habits.
Persons over 50 should get a stool inspection every two years, while those with a history of medical problems should get a checkup once every year.
If patients are able to catch colon cancer while it's still in stage 0 or 1, there is a 90% chance they will live past five years.
