DPP'S NEW NOMINATION RULES
The DPP recently revised its election nomination articles, substituting a national poll for a combination of party primary and opinion poll to determine the party's presidential nominee. Besides, it has also been confirmed that at-large legislator candidates will be nominated by a committee convened by the party chairperson.
Shortly after the DPP's provisional plenary session opened, party representatives rushed onto the stage to protest the Central Standing Committee's plans to scrap presidential primaries.
Many spoke out against the resolution, saying that it disrespected the rights of party members to participate in the nomination process.
In the end, however, the proposal, which replaces election primaries with a national poll, passed by a 227-84 margin. Party members also passed a controversial revision that will see at-large legislators nominated by a committee convened by the party chairperson.
The passing of the two resolutions means that DPP members will no longer have the right to vote in presidential and legislative primaries.
On her way out from the session, Annette Lu blasted the resolutions as the result of factional conflicts. If the meeting was any indication, the DPP's next presidential and legislative primaries will be fraught with dissent.
