Sun's Memorial House Unveiled
A memorial house in honor of the late general Sun Li-ren was unveiled in Taichung earlier this month, with more than 200 of Sun's former subordinates in attendance to witness the historical moment. The event marks a long-delayed attempt by the government to restore the reputation of a legendary war hero who was wrongfully accused of a coup plot 55 years ago.
Along Xiang-shang Road in Taichung City, there is a Japanese-style house where Commander General Sun Li-ren was held house arrest for 33 years.
Where it used to be a place full of mystery since only limited people got a chance to see the interior, it has been turned into a historical site by the city government.
Walking into the site, everything is where it used to be, including the study, and all the interior designs.
Viscount Slim, the Governor-General of Australia, who was also a friend of Sun due to his fathers relationship with Sun, also made a visit to the opening of this site.
During World War II, Commander Sun was awarded for many courageous fights against the Japanese, and had also established a strong relationship with the British and American army.
But when he was the ceremonial chief military adviser to President Chiang Kai-Shek, he was accused of attempting to stage a coup against Chiang and was sent to house arrest.
Since then, his name had been a taboo while Chiang Kai-shek and his sons were in office.
It wasnt until 1990 when he passed away when the Control Yuan investigated his case in details and restored his innocence.
Now his house has been turned into a historical site to remember his great effort to this country.
