Back to School for the Elders
If your grandparents want to go back to school, then that can be done. The Ministry of Education is planning to offer a free learning program for the elders. 2,600 openings will be available among the 56 universities, and senior citizens can now experience what's it's like to be a college student once again.
They may not have a shot at it before, but now, these elders are smiling big, ready to embrace the life of being a college student.
The Ministry of Education has been providing short-term intensive boarding program in recent years, giving individuals the experience to live in the dorms for 5 days.
A variety of courses are being offered, and elders can take courses about how to manage one's emotion, how to eat right, and how to maintain a regular exercise routine.
To extend the program, from this year on, it will be renamed as the "Active Aging Learning Program", which will last for 18 weeks. With 9 classes a week, the elders will be able to learn more, without paying a dime for it.
So what are the requirements to be a college student?
You have to be over 55 years old, and with just that, you can apply for the 56 colleges around Taiwan, even with no education background.
Since this year, more than half of the schools across the island have registered to provide learning sessions for elders, which can be another solution in solving the low rate of students in Taiwan.
