After a long day of intense negotiations, the Legislative Yuan finally passed the amendments to three laws this week, allowing Mainland Chinese students to study in Taiwan's universities. The Ministry of Education expects that about 2,000 mainland students will be accepted by local schools each year.

Despite long disputes across the ruling and the opposition, lawmakers from both sides decided to take a step back and agreed to vote.

The three bills are passed, where the supporting measures of One Restriction and Two Prohibitions are specified.

An appeal is added through a sense of congress resolution, where Mainland Chinese students are not allowed to get off-campus jobs in Taiwan.

Following rounds of negotiation, the KMT and the DPP caucuses reached consensus by agreeing to write into law that Taiwan will not recognize Chinese certificates in medicine-related areas and that Chinese students will be prohibited from enrolling in departments that deal with national security matters such as national defense or take tests to become civil servants in Taiwan or obtain professional certificates and licenses.

Having caused one demonstration and eight violent confrontations in the congress, the bills have finally been passed after two years.

They are expected to go into effect in a year and Mainland Chinese students can apply to study in Taiwan next year at the soonest.
